GDF-8 is a hormone called myostatin which is also known as growth differentiation Factor-8. GDF-8 is produced and launched by myocytes, which interferes with the autocrine function of muscle cells, preventing myogenesis, ie. differentiation and growth of muscle cells. The MSTN gene encodes it in humans. Myostatin, a growth differentiation factor secreted by muscle cells, is a member of the TGF beta family of proteins.

GDF-8 is a propeptide that works by inhibiting the protein myostatin, which is found in nature. Myostatin is a crucial protein that prevents muscle cells from growing and developing. Due to an increased number of muscle fibres, animals like the Belgian blue bull have an extremely lean, ultra-muscular physique because they produce less myostatin than other cow breeds. To stop GDF-8 from binding to its own receptors, GDF-8 binds to myostatin and prevents it from activating. When myostatin binds to these receptors, they usually shut down muscle growth, but muscle growth is unhindered because GDF-8 prevents the binding.

Myostatin deficiency has been associated with substantial gains in muscle mass in humans and animals, according to research. Myostatin deficiency has also been linked to an increase in bone mineral density. Increases in muscle and bone repair were seen in animal studies using GDF-8, suggesting the peptide can be used to replace damaged tissue. Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy, which causes progressive muscle atrophy, is being studied as a treatment option using the peptide.

Peptide was found to be an effective treatment for diseases related to muscle loss in the study, and more research is being done now. Finally, a recent study in mice found that overexpressing the myostatin propeptide blocked myostatin signalling and resulted in remarkable muscle growth. Additionally, the peptide-induced muscle growth and standard force generation were both demonstrated in the same study.
